David Gerald Johnston
June 24, 1939 - January 20th, 2025
It is with great sorrow we announce the death of David Gerald (Gerry) Johnston. Gerry was born to Henrietta and William Johnston on June 24th, 1939, in Rosetown, and died peacefully in Saskatoon on January 20th, 2025.
He is predeceased by his sister Iris, his brother Doug, and his son David. He leaves behind: his brothers Carl (Karen) and Denny (Barb), and his loving wife of 60 years, Hettie; his children Bill, Sean (Janeen), Rick, and Laura; his grandchildren Scott (Emma), Erica (Nick), Gillian (Emmanual) , Luke, Braden (Clare), Logan, Bethany, Mateo, Finley, and Lucy; and his great granddaughter, Ellie.
Gerry met his wife Hettie at a party in Saskatoon on March 28th, 1964, and they married on December 12th of that year. Gerry graduated from the University of Saskatchewan and had a long career as a senior structural engineer. In 1976, Gerry and Hettie bought an acreage near Asquith, where they kept horses, cattle, pigs, and goats throughout the years. He bought and farmed a nearby quarter growing wheat, barley, and oats. One of his greatest pleasures was having his grandchildren visit the farm and help with the animals.
Gerry and Hettie cared for more than a hundred foster children throughout the years. When they moved to Saskatoon in 2005 they began working more with the Community Centre founded by the Westside Pentecostal Church, which they attended for many years. Moving from the farm was hard, but having more time for their church family was a great blessing, and Gerry served at times as Secretary and Treasurer of the Community Centre.
His last years were spent at the Bentley, the Illarion, and the Luther Care Home. His family is grateful for the warm kindness shown to him in those places, with special gratitude to all who attended to his needs during the last few weeks at the Luther Care Home. He loved politics, was a voracious reader, a handyman and mechanic, a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He was a kind and gentle man who helped those around him whenever he could. We will miss him.
The Funeral service will be on February 8th at 1:00 pm, Westside Pentecostal Church, 3488 Fairlight Drive.. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to the charity closest to your heart.
Cremation arrangement are entrusted to Westwood Funeral Chapel
