MOREIRA, Manuel
August 17, 1934 – May 3, 2022
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Manuel Moreira on Tuesday, May 3 at age 87 in Saskatoon. He left us peacefully, surrounded by his wife and children in the home that he so proudly built.
Manuel will be deeply missed by his loving wife of 60 years, Inés (Melo), his sons Tiago (Bernadette), André (Deb Borysko) and his daughter Cecilia Zerr (Phil). He also leaves behind his most cherished grandchildren Emmitt Zerr, Maria Hucul (Devyn), Nolan Zerr, Simon & Christian Moreira and Kailee Moreira.
Manuel was born in Santa Barbara, Santa Maria in the Açores, second oldest to João and Emilia Moreira. He is survived by his sisters Maria Andrade and Emilia Moura, brother João (Conçeiçao) Moreira and is predeceased by siblings Antonio, José, Bernardino, Luis, Jorgina, Alfredo and his beloved little sister Adelina.
In November of 1964, Manuel along with his wife Inés and infant son Tiago, embarked to Canada and made Saskatoon their home. Manuel quickly began a long career in the construction industry and was proud to become a journeyman carpenter. He was involved in countless local construction projects but also drove many miles travelling to jobs across the prairies.
Never taking anything for granted, Manuel worked hard his entire life, whether on his family’s farm in Santa Maria, serving in the army, working in construction, the many wood-working projects in his garage or tending to his bountiful garden. Although work was very important, more important was his faith and his family. Manuel was a devout Catholic and Sunday was reserved for attending Mass and spending precious time visiting with family and friends. Each time we gathered was a special occasion where he was always ready to share his life stories and enjoy many laughs. He loved being Avô to his six grandchildren and his face lit up when any of them came to visit.
Although age and declining health slowed him down physically over the last few years, Manuel remained positive, spirited and optimistic. He rarely complained and when asked how he was feeling, he’d always respond “it could be worse”. We take comfort in knowing his suffering is over. Descanse em Paz, Pai.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Tyan, Dr. Helms, Dr. Fournier, nurses, Shane, Biatta, Rebecca and all the staff with Seniors First. You made our dad’s final days at home comfortable, and we thank you. And to Pat, Peter and Tasia, the most amazing neighbours and valued friends, words can’t express our appreciation for your love and support over the years.
The Prayer Service will be held on Friday, May 6, 2022 at 7:00 pm at Westwood Funeral Chapel, 1402 20th St West.
